If it's the metal-to-metal idea that bothers you why not just make a gasket that wouldn't be visible? I can't see you being happy with painted welting and then there's also the issue of the paint adhering to the welting.

If I were in your position I'd just use the welting and let the purists spin around on their eyebrows.
