Check the ends where the rods attach to the shift levers on the trans. If either or both are worn it will slop around. There are also small springs used at those connections that may be missing. A neoprene bushing is used in some applications on the upper and lower pivot points. They could be worn. The most important first step is to find the exact neutral position, you may have to loosen the arms and move them to do so.
