409 and 348 look basically the same the valve covers look like an inverted 'W'. Since you seem to feel that it is not a 409, then probably isn't 348 either. That leaves 283 or 327 unless someone swapped the motor. There should be an engine ID on the front of the motor under the passenger side head. See if you can find, might have to clean a bit.
