When I do mine I use a foaming type degreaser for lighter stuff, otherwise I find a wire brush on the drill works good. Makes the floor a mess but takes off the caked on stuff right off and takes care of the old gaskets too. I also use a putty knife first to get the bulk of the crud off and a flat head screw driver for the hard to reach spots. I just did a F*** 302 today that way and two other 302s like that as well as my 305E. If you are going cheap for cleaners try powder laundry soap with bleach. Cheap and eats grease- just make sure it gets rinsed off or it'll leave a film.
