The tool the old timer is describing is used when the outer nut is so rusty that the inner nut comes off along with it. An inch and a half box end will do the same thing. It holds the outer nut while you turn the inner nut usually with an impact. Although Budd type wheels are almost obsolete, most truck tire shops still have one. We have used nothing but hub piloted the last 10 years, but we still have the tool laying around. If the inner or outer nut is rusted, we heat it a little and then pour on cold water. The biggest problem is breaking the stud. That is the threaded part, that you screw the inner nut onto. With the old inboard drums, you have to take the whole hub off to put in a new stud. As for the 22.5 tires, at least anyone will change the tubeless. Most people are afraid of 2 or 3 piece tube type wheels. Regarding the 2 speed, you can preselect and when you downshift, just let off the gas momentarily and it will shift. Upshifting requires a little more skill. You must let the rpm's fall down to where it can shift. If you give it the gas too soon, it can grab and tear up the planitary gear.
