It depends how wild is wildly. My amp meter doesn't have any damping for some reason and it oscillates quite a bit with any stimulus. For example, with the engine off, turning on the ignition is good for a couple of gyrations. Now if the gyrations are say larger than quarter scale and the average position is not where you want it to be, then there is a problem. The regulator constantly switches the generator field in and out and thus supplies a lot of fluctuations in current.
