Two cents' worth: about 20 years ago I spent $60-odd on a cooling system tester. The kid at the parts store thought I was crazy; I could rent one for $5 or so. I bought it anyway, found the problem on the vehicle in question.
And over the years have found several more on various cars and trucks. This thing has paid for itself many times over in finding cooling system problems before they left me stranded. *Especially* if you like older iron, it's well worth the money to buy one.
As to the rest of your motor troubles, I haven't a clue. 8-)
