Yes, the back side of the bearings, (rod and main, BTW), need to be installed dry. This is necessary for proper heat transfer, as well as clearance issues. A bearing is slightly oversise, actually projecting above the surface of the block, and cap, and gets a "crush" fit as the cap is tightened. This is important to prevent the bearing from turning in the block or connecting rod. Put all the lube between the bearing and the shaft, none on the back side.
