I read a great article on rings in an engine building mag. I'll read it again and quote here.

BTW, I ordered a set of Patrick's rings for my 235. The top ring is coated (moly?) and the 2nd ring is cast iron. Don't file a moly ring.

The chrome rings are the "racing" rings that are bad for a street application. They have less cylinder tension for less friction at high RPMs for racing. Their oil control is poor, so thats why you see some good-running street hotrods leaving a smoke cloud. Wrong piston ring application.

There is a separate issue with running hyperuetic pistons. The gap on the #1 compression ring has to be set larger than stock with a hyper piston. But you're prolly running cast street slugs, right?
