Don't know if this would work or not, but I have seen "Chinese Finger Puzzle" main seal replacement tools in the shops. cost about $30 CDN. (What's that, 25 - 30 cents US?). It looks like a small piece of braided steel cable that grabs the end of the seal and pulls it around.
Good luck. My rear seal problem is a 1989 Z24. One piece seal around the crank. No idea how to fix it without pulling the engine.
