A word to the wise for those of us using electric fans for our primary engine cooling. USE TWO RELAYS! A friend gave me a neat little adjustable thermostat Hayden fan switch unit, so I decided to use it instead of the two relay system that Alan recommends. All was well until last Saturday when I toofk my 56 down the road to check the speedometer. By the grace of God, I glanced down and noticed that my temp was rising. Pulled over and finally had to run a jumper from the battery to the fan to get home. Turns out that the solitary relay was bad. At first I thought, just replace the relay and go on, but then realized that I had just been very lucky. That said, I took the time this morning to install the two Bosch relays and a Zirgo 180d fixed thermostatic switch as per Alan's website. There is wisdom in redundancy.
Forrest Gump said "Stupid is as Stupid does, Ms. Blue". So I confess, I was stupid. Thank God I wised up before I wiped out my new engine. Thanks again Alan!
