Given the choice of setting point gap or dwell, I'll choose dwell every time. It's much more accurate than the guesswork involved in using a feeler gauge, and if there's any roughness on the surface of the points, a gap setting is totally inaccurate. Also, if you have access to an oscilloscope, dwell variation from cylinder to cylinder can be monitored, indicating distributor bushing wear, or cam irregularities.
