I was having lots of problems with the fuel gauge/sender on my 51 half ton. I ended up going to NAPA and getting a two conductor wire (black and red) with a gray outer sheath. The red wire was my sender wire and the black wire was the ground wire. I used a star washer to make sure I had a good connection at the sender and terminated the other end on the gauge cluster.

I now have a fuel gauge that reads accurately and consistantly.
