We used a lot of lead when I built show cars back in the 70s. Heat isn't so much an issue as is the technique. Unless you have someone to walk you through the process don't bother trying to teach yourself... it's ALL technique that needs a lot of practice.
Lead is way too complicated for a beginner... Bondo works great, just use it.
