Best way to prep a diffy is to powerwash. Last one I cleaned I first scraped all the gunk of I could, then attacked it with degreaser mixed with hot water and a wire brush. (I don't own a powerwasher). Followed with zinc phosphate etch, then I sprayed on Rustoleum black hammered finish rust encapsulating paint. Krylon and Hammerite also make similar paints, Hammerite also has it in a smooth finish. These paints are similar to the Por-15, but not as nasty to work with. I did this last summer and drove through a very salty winter, so far no rust has appeared.
