The 292 debuted in 1962 for the '63 model year. The first year they were painted light green, after that they were Chevy Engine Orange. I have a '63 292 core motor, Casting #: 3789404; made on Con 2 on K 12 2. [Nov 12, 1962]; on the distributor pad it is stamped:F III 6PG.
L6 261s were also painted that apple green, to differ from the 235s, which looked alike from the outside, GMCs used the GMC 270 and 302 L6s, until they started using the Chevy 292 L6. Not sure what year.
