He did say they turned off the kerosene heater but there was still the wood stove which is nothing more than an open flame. Even if the wood stove is pulling air in from the outside through a sealed vent, you've only managed to reduce your risk, not eliminate it.
I don't know how old these guys are so I'm just chalking stunt this up to the "immortality of youth" syndrome.
