I'm not familiar with a '55 but I never knew a door that you couldn't remove the interior trim panel and get access to the inner workings.
This isn't high-tech stuff, it's just levers and handles. Look for loose or broken parts. Chances are your hinges have gotten so bad the weight of the door has finally overcome you ability to move it.
