Clockwise is right. Usually the distributor is set so the rotor points toward the #1 plug for the #1 firing position. Should be about 2 o'clock.

Also, a trick to find the #1 in firing position is to hold a finger over the plug hole while turning the engine. When the pressure blows your finger off the hole you're close enough to locate the timing mark. Usually you can turn the engine by hand, using the fan blades.
