I think the 230s are lighter than the 235. Another big advantage is that the third generation had the same bolt pattern for the bellhousing as the V8s, thus allowing interchanges of engines without different bellhousing castings being necessary.

The 230 and 250 even mount the same as the 283. The 292 was the same on the passenger side, if I remember correctly, but different on the driver's side. (I might have the sides mixed up though)
