Hi Steve;
The 230 was part of the "new" 3rd generation of 6 cyl. engines that came along in '63 (possibly a little earlier in the first Chevy ll's) that also included the 194 and then a little later the 250. It was a redesigned engine with 7 main bearings. It eventually became the basis for the mighty 292 which a lot of the guys on this forum use in their 'bolts.
I'm sure someone will come along soon and be able to add to, or correct, this.
