4WD let's you get farther into the boonies before you have to call someone to pull you out.
The better way to drive, if you have a choice, is to get there in 2 wheel drive, and if you get stuck, use 4 wheel drive to get back.
I figure the same idea will work for the selectable rear locker in my 2 wheel drive truck.
