I think the answer would be yes, but there are several catches. The 80 amps you note is the designed output capacity for the alternator. This is all well and good, but it's the voltage regulator that is adjusted for max current (amps) and will tell the alternator when to turn on or turn off.

Although I don't know this for a fact, I'll be surprised if you can find any stock voltage regulator that was set for 80 amps.

Output of this amount would have been found in later SI alternators that were equipped with their own internal regulators...quite capable of handling this amount of current, and sometimes more. A vehicle that used a alternator and external regulator wouldn't have had accessories that demanded a output of 80 amps...that's a lot of juice!

Are you sure you are clear on what system you have, internally regulated (SI), or the old externally regulated type.

If you are using the old external regulated alternator, it would make lots of sense to scrap it and move up to a more modern style. You could get an alternator with 150 amp output if you wanted.
