While I'm waiting for the snow to melt so I can start sandblasting the frame, I decided to clean and possibly rebuild, if needed, the steering box. I removed the side cover and the end cover. I removed the shaft. Everything looked real good inside. The gears looked very good with no grinding noises from dirt, worm bearings looked good as well also. The bearing box looked solid with no dirt, corrosion, scratches, etc...I need to replace the (2) gaskets for the end and side covers and while I'm at it, the worm gears. Should I replace anything else while it's open? Also, are the steering boxes different between light duty and 2 ton trucks? I've seen cover gaskets available on vendor websites, but only (1) for the side cover, not the end cover. Also, does the steering column sleeve that attaches to the steering box come off? I was curious if it's threaded to the box. If so, mines tight as heck.
Thanks,
