I have only broken one hardened bolt, a head bolt. It was a complete surprise because they don't really twist at all they just snap. With my experience, the head bolt extracted really easily once there was no tension on it. If I remember correctly, I used the top stub to turn it out, once the head was off. This was because the fracture was a perfect fit between the two halves.
