The only difference between hot and cold is the viscosity of the oil. So, a clog seems like a good guess since when the oil is hot it has no trouble getting through the blockage.
I once had a Chrysler Town and Country station wagon. The transmission ended up doing the same thing when the filters clogged. It would work fine once warmed up.
