Earl, can't answer your question about a tube shock conversion... I am still trying to figure that out myself. There was a single action and double action style Knee action shock. I imagine the double action would work pretty well. The only advantage I could see to swap them out is parts availability. I am not sold on better performance, but maybe somebody will chime in and educate us. I think that is a good question.
