What year and size truck are you installing it on? Most older GMs (pre-73 w/staggared shocks) the upper shock mounts are placed just aft of the axle centerline, basicly flush to the axle housing cover face. Shocks themselves are mounted at an approximate 45 degree angle from verticle, with the uppers pointed inboard.
