the two wires are indeed as you said. One wire, which should have an inline fuse, is used to power the radio and should be connected to the load side of the amp meter. The other wire should be run to the dash light supply on the headlight control.
There is a tech tip that explains the safe way to test out your radio. I think it might be good to read it before proceeding.
