Why are you so resistant to checking the timing? Points and condensors on non electronic ignition systems should be replaced every 10K miles for good performance, every 6K for optimum performance. Point gap and timing change with wear. Orange spark from HT circuit is inadequate. Too retarded timing requires a richer mixture and causes exhaust popping.
