I thought so. Dusty has the right idea. Floor shifter transmissions have pivot pins on either side of the shift lever, right where it goes into the top case of the transmission. Just replace these pivot pins, most older parts stores can get them (parts chain store employees will just look stupid at you).
This problem is fairly common to any transmission that has been used a lot. As a last resort, go to the junkyard and sort through some old floor shift trans, you might find a few pivot pins in good enough shape to use.
