First thought (because of the dieing when you step on the throttle) was the fuel filter in the front of the carb is plugged with crud. The choke is obviously sticking and causing the black smoke and choking/back-fire.
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.
