Actually, putting the spring on backwards wouldn't make any sense. By doing so, it would hold the valve in the "heat off" position when starting the truck...of course, it needs to be in the "heat on" postion at that point.
If the spring was installed backwards (contrary to the picture in the manual) the valve would never have a chance to close and heat up the intake manifold and carburetor.
