Jim, go look at the angled machined surface on the side of your engine, right behind the distributer. Take a knife or a screwdriver, scape off the crud, and look at the numbers stamped on there. You might have to use a flashlight at different angles before you can read them. The first three numbers are your engine size - now is that handy, or what? The most likely would be 228, possibly 236 or 248.
The 302 was made from '52 until '59. About half of them went into army duece and a halfs, the rest went into 2 & 1/2 or 3 ton commercial trucks. It has the same outside dimensions as your stock engine.
