You have to engage the mechanical lever on the starter to get it to turn over. The first bit of travel slides the drive in place and the last part makes the connection.
If you are doing this from inside the cab, it would be useful to have a way of cutting the power in case you need to. I had the battery on the floor and I could pull the battery cable.
