This is a very simple chore to do.

Hook up a good heavy cable from the frame ground to the the neg of the battery ( Chev I take it). Connect the positive lead to the large terminal on the starter. Run a small clipcord from the starter terminal to the supply side or +ve side of the coil. The other side of the coil is attached to the distributor points.

MAKE NOTE THAT to stop the engine you have to pull the clipcord or the battery lead.

Also, don't use jumper cables to connect the battery, they just won't do the job.
