I Had a 700R4 rebuilt about 3 or 4 years ago including a new torque converter for $700 at one man mechanic shop that specialized in automatic transmissions. The guy that rebuilt it was good on transmissions and was cheap in comparisons to teh name brand shops that wanted $1200 to $1600 to do the same thing. That was 80,000 miles ago and the transmision had either 260,000 or 360,000 miles on it when it was rebuilt. The only problem I've had with the transmission is that the old Burb with the Diesel doesn't have a computer so the torque converter doesn't lock up and the oil cooks a little when your running at 70MPH so I have to pump it out and put in fresh oil every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. The transmision did fail on my wife since it was rebuilt; as she was driving it, it droped into low range and wouldn't shift up. The plastic governor gear disentagrated and I had to replace it. Imagine that a $10 plastic gear wearing out after a measily 300,000 to 400,000 miles.
