The standard truck 4spd is to the left against a spring tension and back. Saginaw?? That's a car trans! The 68 and later trannies were to the right and back against spring tension again. If you have an early 47, it needed a lever pulled on the lever to drop into reverse. OR, even one trans then was just a 3spd on the floor, much smaller case though. Try to spray good light oil into shift tower after removing the cap and lever there, maybe just rusty. Was there water in trans when removed or drained? You can also remove the bolts on top cover and lift whole thing off, just have to position gears and forks right when going back on. You can move the gears and parts around to see if loose.
