The Pitman arm on the steering gear, and the idler arm on the passenger's side must be paralell, and must mount on the frame in the same location, front-to-rear. The relay rod is the piece of linkage that connects the Pitman arm and the idler arm, and it must be shortened the same amount as the crossmember. The linkage forms a paralellogram as the steering moves from side to side, so the relay rod MUST be shortened. You will probably have to weld plates onto the frame on both sides, one for the steering gear mount, and one in the same location on the opposite frame rail for the idler arm.
