JD, there should be thin copper washers on each side of the brass block, one between the head of the banjo bolt and the block and one between the block and the wheel cylinder. They are the same as the washers between the hose ends and the front wheel cylinders. They should be 7/16" inside diameter.

No sealer of any kind should be used anywhere in the hydraulic part of a Stovebolt brake system.

Seems strange that a leak so small it took you several weeks to find it could cause that much trouble bleeding the brakes. You might want to check the master cylinder to be sure it is assembled correctly. If the residual valve at the bottom of the bore is not working properly it can make it very difficult to get the brakes bled.
