I always cut the cable sheath with a bench grinder. Pull the cable out, mark where the housing is to be cut, and hold it against the grinding wheel. If you don't have a bench grinder, a pneumatic cutoff tool will work.

If you mash the sheath, you won't get smooth cable movement.
