I finally figured out what was causing my acc to stick. If I applied throttle from under the hood it returned to idle perfectly.In the driver's seat it usually did not return to idle without kicking it or grabbing it by hand. I had removed the "through the cab" device, disassembled it and lubricated it. Turned out to be a sticky hinge at the base of the accelerator pedal. I removed it from the floor, but no amount of oil or penetrant would make it operate smoothly.
I ordered a new accelerator pedal from Classic Parts Of America. Received it yesterday. It was more stiff than the old one. Absolutely no way it would work. It would bend at the right place but had no real flexibility. I called Classic this afternoon and described my problem. The salesman said they had received no complaints. I suggested perhaps he should pull one off the shelf and check it. Surely The one in my hand was not the only stiff one. He did pull one and admitted it was very stiff. He offered a refund of my charges, and I asked about them sending a prepaid mailing slip. He said just forget about returning it, that he would give me a full refund.
Since I did not have to return the new one. I cut the rubber where I would have expected to find a hinge. There was none: only a strip of thin metal which broke after I flexed it about ten times.
Focusing on the old pedal,I drove the pivot rod from the hinge. After cleaning and lubricating the brass rod, the reassembled hinge worked smoothly. I cut the old pedal about two inches above the hinge, ground all the old rubber off to leave bare clean metal. I likewise cleaned all the rubber from bottom two inches of the backside of the new pedal and glued the two pieces together with gorilla glue.
Problem solved.
