In 1969 I bought a new Chevrolet 3/4 ton
Camper Special...It had the 396 CI engine and a
R 400 transmission, with positraction...I had a
Wolverine 13 ft. camper to haul, and a 24 foot
fiber glass cutty cabin boat to pull, and the weight
amounted to 6500 pounds between them, so I was right
tight on My gross vehicle weight...The 396 CI pulled
everything around like it was nothing...when the camper was off, and the boat off, it got 10 miles to the gallon, and when it all went back on, I got 10 miles to the gallon...so the differential did that...I put 12.50 flotation tires on the rear because many times when launching the boat the was nothing but sand, and they helped Me stay up on top....The real fun was when I would pull along side a young whippersnapper driving a GTO, that 396 would leave Him picking gravel out of His teeth...but at 60 MPH He would go by Me like a bullet... grin Bill B
