The verticle 2x4's are trimmed equally from each side to center in the stake pocket hole and then angle cut at the bottom to fit the angled side. The horizontal side boards fit in dado cut grooves in the vertical boards to eliminate the wobbling and looks nicer. Carriage bolts look nice on the joints but screws and carpenters glue would be fine also. Hope this helps a little.
