Some 216s used a 5/8" wide belt, the later 235s had a skinnier belt. If you tried to use a 216 balancer w/ a 5/8" belt, the belt wouldn't fit the '54-later 235 water pump and alternator pulleys.
The smaller dia balancer only causes charging problems below 1,000 rpm with an alternator. I'm running a '54 1st series 7/16" belt 235 balancer on a 2nd series 235. The 1st series 235s had slightly smaller pulleys than later ones.
