You'll need have to file a claim with the city.

I ran into the same thing a long time ago while driving a '65 Buick Skylark at night. I hit this moon size crater that was suposed to have baricades around it, but someone came along before me and hit them and took them out, so there was no warning.....just BOOM BOOM!. I lost three spoked wheel covers, bent one rim, bubbled a tire and knocked out a wheel bearing.

The claims process can take a long time so be sure to document everything and take pictures of everything...the damage, the pothole etc. try to find witnesses and anybody else who hit the hole....and be persitant. Don't let the city push you around.

In my case , it happened at night so the next day I went back to take pictures and the crater was already filled in.
