2x6" steel box tubing is pretty stout, but the real question is what gauge is it. If it was 1/4" thick or 3/16" thick then I think it would work cross bracing or no. I would think you'd have to have the transmission crossmember. I don't think a 2 point engine mounting system would ever work.
