Did you remove the valve cover and slowly rotate the engine, checking the gaps between the rocker arms and intake and exhaust valves?
A few months ago, after letting an engine sit for several months, a few of the exhaust valves stuck open (far enough for lifter push rods to come out of position). I lubricated the valve stems/guides and cleaned the oil lines to the rocker arm shaft.
