Sounds like you are describing a Nutsert. To install them, you need a tool that looks similar to a pop rivet tool. DAGS on nutsert and it will bring up a lot of pages. They come in thin sheet and thickwall versions. Thin sheet will work fine for the doors. Plus they are easier to install.
