Whoever told you that because it's a 4x4, you can't swap tranny's, is flat out wrong. aAs Mech says, you can do it. In fact you have more flexiblity than you would with a modern 4x4. In addition, there are plenty of guys who have gone to a modern tranny/t-case setup.
